An embodied approach to data

Sinds 2018, I have been developing a critique of dominant narratives that treat data as disembodied. Instead, I argue, all data that relates to people is embodied data. In the digital age, bodies and data are so closely intertwined that the line between our physical and virtual bodies is increasingly becoming irrelevant - so much so, in fact, that maintaining the distinction is becoming harmful. In practice, the nature and impact of data and data practices relating to people is embodied, and taking this into account is crucial if we are to create digital societies in which everyone can flourish.

My latest publication on the topic is ‘Embodied Data and AI: A Collection of Essays’, which I edited as a Senior Fellow with Research ICT Africa. For more writing on this topic, check the Selected Writings section as well as here.
